Surrey, British Columbia, Canada – The Emergency Department portion of the new Critical Care Tower addition to the Surrey Memorial Hospital opened earlier this month, October 2013. The rest of the eight-story expansion will be completed on April 2014 and will be set to open later that year. The newly unveiled Emergency Department (ED) is five times larger than the existing care space, and is the largest emergency department in the British Columbia. The new 57,000 square foot ED includes a new Adult Mental Health and Substance Use zone, a Pediatric Emergency zone, a Medical Imaging department, and three Acute Zones.

The Surrey Memorial Hospital expansion project began in 2011 as a response to the growing population in the Surrey region. Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department alone receives over 90,000 visitors per year. Addressing the issue, Fraser Health, one of six publicly funded health care regions in British Columbia, is overseeing the expansion project, providing a total of $512 million towards its advancement. The expense marks the project as the British Columbian government’s largest ever capital investment in healthcare.

The construction of the critical care tower is being funded through a Public-Private Partnership agreement with Integrated Team Solutions (ITS) and a team made up of several partners, including EllisDon Construction, Fengate Capital Management, Honeywell, Parkin Architechure Limited, and CEI Architecture Planning Interiors. The Transition Planning division of HTS, Inc. a project management company serving the healthcare and construction industries, worked with the Surrey Memorial Hospital to ensure the success of their new hospital transition. Hospital renovations are expected to continue into 2015.
